6 Ways to Show Yourself Respect (And Teach Others to Do the Same)

It doesn’t make you egoistic if you are self-respectful. Instead, showing yourself respect is a great way of loving yourself. When you love and respect yourself, others will treat you in the same way, as well.

Thus, below is a list of 6 things you can do in order to be more respectful to yourself.

  1. Find out things which make you respect yourself. In order to do so, you need to look deep inside yourself and find your true values and morals. Although it sounds difficult, it couldn’t be simpler. For example, some people respect themselves more if they exercise on a daily basis, eat more fruits and vegetables or take a walk outside every day.
  2. Be honest about who you are. The next step is to find out what your true passions are. You need to look deep inside and define what you are meant to be. For example, if you love kids but you work at a supermarket, it is clearly not the right job for you. Instead, you should be honest with yourself and seek for a pedagogical position.
  3. Don’t be afraid to take the first step in order to fulfil your dreams. It is always scary to start doing something which you don’t know. When it comes to our goals and dreams, we are afraid that we won’t be able to accomplish them and we don’t even try. However, keep in mind that the most successful people also had to start somewhere. For example, Steve Jobs started his career in a garage and Mark Zuckerberg left his studies in order to focus on what he really liked.
  4. Stop trying so hard to be “normal”. You should stop putting yourself in frames dictated by the society. You don’t have to please everyone. What makes you stand out from the crowd is your own uniqueness. Don’t lose your individuality only because it is different than others.
  5. Don’t let other people define your limits. A lot of people have good intentions towards you but there are also those who don’t like to see others succeed. Thus, instead of listening to other people that you can’t do something, trust your abilities and do what you want anyways.
  6. Learn to say no. If saying yes to others makes you miserable, you should stop it. You have to know when to say no so that other people would respect you more. You don’t have to be someone who drops everything in order to help others. Yes, supporting others is a wonderful quality to have but only if you don’t neglect yourself.
